Dr. Matthew Martin, MD, is the Trauma Medical Director and Chief of Surgical Research at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC), Tacoma, Washington. He is an active duty Colonel in the US Army. He holds the academic titles of Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Martin supervises all aspects of trauma operations at Madigan Army Medical Center, a state-designate level 2 trauma center. Dr. Martin is also responsible for developing and directing the basic science and animal research program at MAMC, and directly supervises a team of research scientists, technicians, and surgical residents participating in their research year of residency. Dr. Martin is a locally and nationally recognized trauma surgeon and researcher, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 10 book chapters. In addition, he is the principal editor and co-author of a recently published textbook on combat trauma, Front Line Surgery (Springer Publishing, Inc.). Dr. Martin’s research laboratory has established a productive line of basic science and large-animal trauma research that has resulted in multiple presentations at national meetings and peer-reviewed publications. The current focus of his research lab includes projects utilizing his recently developed porcine model of tension pneumothorax and research into pharmacologic adjuncts to resuscitation and control of coagulopathy in severe trauma. Dr. Martin has served on multiple forward deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan, most recently as the Commander of the 655th Forward Surgical Team in Afghanistan. He has been selected to serve as the Army Chair to the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma. He is a member of multiple organizations including the American College of Surgeons, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Western Trauma Association, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Society of University Surgeons, and Association of Academic Surgeons. Dr. Martin completed his medical degree and a Master’s degree in Medical Science at Boston University. He then completed training in General Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center and fellowship training in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center.
